If you are passionate about the world of aerial photography and are a fan of drones, this comparison will interest you. In it, we analyze the most important differences and similarities of two of the best-selling mini drones on Amazon: DJI Mini 2 SE and Potensic ATOM SE. Of course, before starting, it is important to highlight that I have chosen the Fly More Combo (DJI) and Expansion (Potensic) packs, which include more accessories than the standard versions.

As an initial summary, I will tell you that there is more difference in price than there is between the features of both drones. As for size, the truth is that we are looking at two practically identical drones, both in dimensions and weight. On the other hand, both have important similarities, such as maximum altitude, speed or wind resistance, in both cases level 5. They are also compatible with a mobile app, and work in the same temperature conditions.

However, there are many differences to take into account. For example, autonomy, although it should be noted that the Potensic pack we have chosen includes 2 batteries, so it has double the autonomy. On the other hand, although, theoretically, the DJI Mini 2 SE has a lower resolution of the camera sensor, the truth is that the videos are seen with higher quality and clarity. In addition, the stabilization system is much better on the DJI drone, as well as the video transmission range.

Now, is the price difference justified? So that you can check the differences and similarities in detail, we have prepared this complete review! Keep reading if you have questions about which drone to choose.

Two small but tough drones

DJI Mini 2 SE vs Potensic ATOM SE

Don’t be fooled by the size of these two drones. Both have practically the same dimensions and weight, and, if we had to classify them, we would say that they are from the mini drone range. They both weigh a little less than a quarter of a kilo, and they fit in the palm of your hand if you don’t deploy the propellers. Now, this does not mean that they are not effective drones; In fact, both have exceeded our expectations, although we recognize that one more than the other.

Very equal in speed and altitude

In reality, we are not surprised that they reach practically the same maximum ascent, descent and horizontal speed considering that they are the same size. To give you an idea, both fly at a speed of approximately 16 m/s, and can reach an altitude of up to 4000 meters in favorable conditions.

The same happens when it comes to wind resistance, which in both drones is up to 38 km/h. For two such small drones, it is a good resistance, although we do not recommend taking it to the limit.

Image quality, more similar

One of the most important aspects when choosing a drone is the quality of the images and videos that we will obtain. In fact, it is the most important thing, and therefore it is worth looking at in detail. Here we see more differences. Especially when recording videos. But let’s go in parts and start with the images.

The two drones have a CMOS image sensor with 12 effective megapixel resolution for images. The Potensic drone has a slightly wider field of view, although it is not usually a difference with great relevance in the final result. On the other hand, the DJI drone has a 4x zoom, an advantage over its rival. The maximum size of the photographs is not very different, although those of the DJI drone are somewhat larger.

What happens with the videos?

Potensic ATOM SE vs DJI Mini 2 SE

Video recording does present more differences, and we have to say that in favor of the DJI Mini 2 SE. It’s curious, because, theoretically, this drone records at a lower resolution (2.7 K). However, in practice, the images have much better resolution than those of the Potensic ATOM SE, which records in 4 K. In addition, the DJI Mini 2 SE has a video transmission range of up to 10 kilometers, up from 4 kilometers that the Potensic achieves.

Much of this curiosity is due to the stabilization system that each drone has. The DJI one has 3-axis mechanical stabilization, which gives it much more stability than the Potensic has. This drone, for its part, has the Shake Vanish stabilization system, but it is much weaker than its rival.

Autonomy can be a difference

To be fair, we highlight it as a difference because we have compared the version of the Potensic ATOM SE that includes 2 batteries, and that doubles the autonomy. And that, despite the fact that it is cheaper. Thus, this drone has two 2500 mAh capacity batteries that provide more than an hour of battery life. On the other hand, the DJI Mini 2 SE has a 2250 mAh battery, with which it can fly for half an hour or so. The charging time is very similar in both cases, with the difference that, in the Potensic, you can always have a battery ready.

Compatible with a mobile app

DJI vs Potentic

Another aspect that can influence the purchase decision, although in this case it is a similarity, is compatibility with a mobile app. Either of our two protagonists can be controlled through the smartphone, although the main advantage of the app is usually (at least, for us) the editing of the images.

Speaking of editing, keep in mind that the DJI Mini 2 SE offers a series of intelligent recording modes that allow you to give more free rein to your creativity. For its part, the Potensic ATOM SE has 3 simpler modes, but for amateur use they are more than enough.

Which mini drone seems most interesting to us?

The answer to this question would change depending on the use you are going to give the drone. Technically, and if we are 100% objective, the DJI Mini 2 SE is a drone that provides more qualitative results in terms of image recording and photo capture. It also achieves more transmission range, but this is a feature that you may care less about at home. On the other hand, its price is higher than that of the Potensic ATOM SE, even though it only includes one battery, compared to the two that its rival has.

With these arguments in the balance, we have to make a decision. If you are going to use the drone professionally, as a work tool, or with the main objective of capturing the best images, we undoubtedly recommend the DJI Mini 2 SE. That is, if you are going to make an investment in a drone for work, this one should be the best technically.

But, if you want the drone for fun and do not need so much perfection, the Potensic ATOM SE is a much cheaper alternative and with which you will obtain good results. Maybe not with as much quality as you would have with the DJI, but plenty at an amateur level. That said, think about what your preferences are and, above all, what you are going to use the drone for the most part.
