However, the battery in the new controller, despite being more recent, is smaller, which means that its duration is shorter. On the other hand, we must take into account the price difference, which is quite substantial, and which is in favor of the DualSense. From a flat design to a modernist one
The first impression already indicates that there is a change in terms of aesthetics. Mainly, it gives us the feeling that PlayStation is going from a flatter design to a more modern one, combining different colors and textures. It should be noted that the DualSense is available in various colors, all of which remind us a lot of the legendary GameBoy. On the other hand, the DualSense Edge can only be purchased, at the moment, in white.
However, this does not make it present a simpler design, quite the opposite. The buttons have a black-on-white contrast, whereas on the DualSense they’re all the same color as the controller, giving it more of a flat feel. In addition, the central part of the DualSense Edge has a relief design in which we can see the four icons of the controls as a pattern.
Apart from the differences, it is worth noting some similarities in the design of the two controls: the shape and dimensions are very similar, and the layout of the buttons, too. Also, in both controllers we see the PlayStation logo in the central part, a detail that we always like to find.
The battery, advantage for the DualSense
Logic leads us to think that battery capacity improves in the latest models, but in this case, it is not. The DualSense Edge incorporates a smaller battery than the DualSense, with a lower capacity, going from 1560 mAh to 1050 mAh. As a consequence, autonomy is reduced.
While the DualSense can be used for around 10-12 hours, the DualSense Edge lasts no more than 6-7 hours. Of course, it takes a little less time to load, but the difference is little, because the DualSense does not have an excessive charging time either. What both models do share is compatibility with the DualSense charging station.
Buttons and joysticks, customization differences
We come to another of the key aspects of this type of controller for PlayStation: the set of buttons and joysticks to control movement. At first glance, we see that the main controls are located identically in both cases. But, in addition, the DualSense Edge incorporates two buttons on the back as a lever, and that can be configured to have other button inputs or to modify the actions that you carry out the most.
In this sense, the covers of the joysticks can also be exchanged and reassigned, which gives the controller a greater degree of customization. In addition, the distance of the triggers can be reduced to make the movements more quickly. In general, the DualSense Edge offers a higher level of customization that translates into more comfort and efficiency when gaming, adapting the wireless controller to your style of game.
Of course, both models have the adaptive triggers typical of this controller, so that the feeling of immersion in the game is greater. The more resistance you apply, the more intense the gaming experience will be. On the other hand, they also incorporate a microphone and noise cancellation so you can communicate with other players without external interference.
Compatibility with other devices
Now let’s talk about the compatibility of wireless controllers with other devices. The most interesting thing to know is that they are not compatible with PS4, but have been developed specifically for the PS5. Instead, they can be paired with iPhone, iPad, MAC or Apple TV devices via Bluetooth connection.
Now, since both controls have a 3.5 mm headphone jack, these can also be connected to the DualSense. In fact, there can be up to 4 controllers connected to the same PS5 at the same time.
DualSense vs DualSense Edge: Is it worth switching to the new controller for PS5?
It depends on which features are most important to you. The main strength of the DualSense Edge is the high level of customization that you can exercise on the controller to adapt it to your style of play as much as possible and, with it, improve the user experience.
However, it has some considerations, such as less autonomy or a higher price. In fact, we can actually say that the DualSense Edge is a version that slightly improves the operation of the DualSense. However, the DualSense is, by itself, an important innovation compared to other competing models.
Therefore, aesthetic issues aside, because we cannot deny that we are more convinced by the Edge’s design, we consider that the DualSense has a very interesting and more attractive value for money than the Edge. This one has more configurable features than each other, but the performance and the most relevant functionalities, such as adaptive triggers, are very similar in both cases. That being said, it is up to you to choose the most suitable wireless controller for PS5.
