Spectacular design

Instax mini 40 vs. 90 vs. 70

For the most nostalgic, for young vintage lovers and, above all, for all tastes.

Instax Mini cameras have an irresistible design. On the one hand, we have the Instax mini 40 with a design in the purest retro style. It is true that the mini 90 follows a similar design, although new airs can be seen in its lines. Instead, the Instax Mini 70 combines the classic and the avant-garde in an exquisite way.

And with this we do not mean only the design. The Instax mini 70 is available in up to 7 colors, all very colorful and colorful. Following a more traditional line, the Instax mini 40 and 90 stick to more standard or traditional colors.

In terms of dimensions, the mini 70 is the smallest followed closely by the Instax mini 40. However, the mini 40 is also the heaviest; about 30 or 40 grams more than their sisters.

Another notable feature is the presence of an LCD screen on the Instax mini 70 and mini 90. Old is nice and all, but a little tech never hurts at all.

The movie

In case you don’t have much idea what we mean, we are talking (very basically) about the piece of paper on which the machine prints the photograph.

All three of Fujifilm’s models use “instax mini” Instant Color Film, so if you’re deciding between one of these cameras, the price of the film doesn’t matter much to you. You’re going to have to pay for it yes or yes.

These films are 86 x 46 mm in size, resulting in the final image size being 62 x 46 mm. The size is what it is, you should know that by now.

Developing time is around 90 seconds on all three cameras, so you won’t have to wait long to get a memory in your hands.

Flash

The flash is a fundamental part of these cameras. This intense and fleeting light gives that special touch to the photos and adds a vintage touch to them that is very attractive. But you have to know that there are differences between cameras in this regard.

For example, the Instax mini 40 offers a standard flash, with no other options. On the other hand, the mini 70 allows you to choose between automatic flash or fill flash (which is used to balance the brightness of the image). On the other hand, the Instax mini 90, apart from what has already been mentioned, gives the option of suppressing the flash.

If we talk about range, things are equal in all three cameras. Of course, you will have to take into account the state of the battery, since it can influence the brightness of the flash.

Selfie mode

Surely, when the first instant cameras were designed, they were intended to be used with the lens pointing forward. But times, like it or not, change and the way of doing things also.

For this reason, these three Fujifilm cameras incorporate a lens to take good selfies, as well as a small mirror that will be very useful to know if you are well framed, if the image includes everything you want or if you are bordering on ridiculous.

Battery

Instant cameras, automatic development, flash… All of this sounds great, but you are surely wondering how to feed all this without being stuck with the second photograph. Don’t worry.

The Instax mini 40 works thanks to two AA alkaline batteries (the usual ones), so we recommend you bring a spare pair of them.

The Instax mini 70 is powered by two CR2 lithium batteries, which provide greater autonomy.

Lastly, the Instax mini 90 features a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Little to say unless: more economical, greater autonomy and more careful with the environment.

Photo and timer modes

You have already seen part of what these machines hide, but it remains to be seen specifications that can affect the user experience.

One of them is the presence of a timer in the Instax mini 70 and mini 90. An option that gives the camera a lot of play and gives it versatility. Likewise, landscape mode is present on the mini 70 and mini 90, and is very useful for taking wider photos.

However, the Instax mini 90 stands out for its Hi Key mode. Let’s see how we explain it. Summing up the concept, it consists of manipulating the lighting of the images to achieve a result that can be radically different.

Let’s get technical

Instax mini 70 vs. 40 vs. 90

We have relegated this point to the end, since it is more complex knowledge that we know is not very common among those who are looking for their first camera or are occasional users of an Instax mini. If this is your case, the only thing that matters to you about this point may be which is better and period.

In a matter of lenses, the three cameras are even. We could say the same if we refer to the exposure control, automatic in the three Instax mini. This refers to the amount of light that the camera sensors receive and that helps to shape the final photograph.

On the other hand, we did find more differences in terms of shutter speed. This refers to the time that elapses between when you press the button to take the photo and the machine takes it. The Instax mini 70 and mini 90 are more versatile in this field. Although we already warned you that in this type of cameras it is not such a crucial aspect.

Which Instax mini to choose?

Here’s the crux of the matter, as there are enough differences between the cameras that making a decision will give you some headaches.

With the specs on the table, it’s clear that the Instax Mini 90 is the better option. Not only does it have a rechargeable battery, but it has more photography modes, more flash customization, and despite maintaining a classic style, it offers some customization options. Of course, as is evident, it requires a greater economic investment.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a camera with a more modern design, the Instax Mini 70 is undoubtedly the right choice. It does not reach the level of the mini 90, but it fulfills its mission very well.
