The fashion for instant cameras is cyclical, and there are times when it comes back stronger and we start to see this type of cameras everywhere. In this article, we wanted to focus on two versions of the same model, Polaroid Now, comparing the second generation with the original. Roughly speaking, we can tell you that it has been difficult for us to find differences, since most of the features are identical.

In fact, the Polaroid Now 2 and the Polaroid Now 1 have the same price, without taking into account the possible seasonal offers that each of them have separately. Aesthetically, they are also very similar, with some small details that make the difference. For example , the Polaroid Now 2 has, in all its models, the bottom stripe black, while the Polaroid Now 1 can have it the same color as the rest of the camera.

Another difference between both instant cameras has to do with the type of charger they have, although the charging time is the same. For the rest of the things, we have not found many more changes. What’s more, the performance of both cameras is the same, as is the development time and the dual-lens autofocus system or double exposure. But to find out more, keep reading!

Few aesthetic differences

Polaroid Now 2 vs Polaroid Now 1

The first thing we see is that the two Polaroid cameras have the same size and, practically, the same aesthetics. The Polaroid Now 1 is available in a wider variety of colors, since the Polaroid Now 2 can only be found mixing white with three colors, or all in black. For this reason, the Polaroid Now 1 is more physically versatile, and it is easier to find a color that we like (remember that this is one of the great attractions of instant cameras). Thus, this model is available in yellow, blue, green, pink, red, white and black.

The type of charger is the main difference

One of the differentiating elements that we have found between the two Polaroid Nows is the type of charger, which is not exactly the same. But, first of all, let’s contextualize. Both instant cameras have a 750 mAh battery that can cover up to approximately 15 films (have a little less just in case). Likewise, both take about two hours to fully recharge, but the type of cable they use is different.

The Polaroid Now 2 uses a USB-C cable, while the Polaroid Now 1 charges with the micro-USB cable. In reality, it is an adaptation that has been imposed by the time in which each camera has been launched, but it is important to take it into account in case you decide to renew the Polaroid Now 1 for the 2, since the same charger would not be worth it. .

Autofocus and double exposure function

Polaroid Now 1 vs 2

Two of the most iconic qualities of the Polaroid Now are shared by both cameras. On the one hand, they have a double exposure function, through which two shots are superimposed to improve the quality and sharpness of the photograph. On the other hand, they have a dual-lens autofocus system, with two different fixed focus distances depending on how far away the object is. This distance is 0.55m-1.3m or 0.6m to infinity. Of course, the focal length is the same in both cases, 102 mm. Additionally, both cameras have automatic exposure control.

If we get more specific, the Polaroid Now 2 offers better results when we use the night mode. In this case, the Polaroid Now 2 is able to achieve a more interesting balance between capturing all the details but maintaining the nighttime atmosphere. Night photographs, with the Polaroid Now 1, come out much brighter.

Timer and flash: no changes

Another aspect in which we did not find major variations between both generations of Polaroid Now is the timer. In both cases, we have to wait 9 seconds from when we press the button until the photo appears, so that we have time to place them in front of the lens. On the other hand, when it comes to flash, there are no big changes. Perhaps we expected an improvement in terms of flash distance, but the result is the same in both cases.

Films and development time

Polaroid Now 2 vs 1

Both the Polaroid Now 2 and 1 are compatible with 600-type or I-Type films. The development time depends more on the type of film (it should always be indicated), but it usually ranges between 10 and 15 minutes. Important: do not move the photograph when it is being developed, as indicated by Polaroid itself. Regarding the size of the photographs, you should know that, without the frame, the size of both is 8 x 8 cm. With the frame, the size amounts to approximately 11 x 9 cm.

To see the number of photographs remaining per film, both cameras have a small counter on the back. When you release a cartridge, the maximum number of photographs you have is 8.

Is it worth changing the Polaroid Now 1 for the Polaroid Now 2?

Our sincere opinion is that if you already have the Polaroid Now 1, it is not worth upgrading to the second generation camera. As you have seen, the differences are minimal and not so substantial as to make the change really worth it. In fact, they are more aesthetic and updating differences regarding the charging cable, but the relevant aspects when taking photographs are practically the same.

If you don’t have either of the two instant cameras and are wondering which one to buy, we recommend opting for the Polaroid Now 2 directly. Not only because it has the most up-to-date charging cable, but because the only real difference we have noticed compared to the previous model is that the second generation takes better photos in night mode. And, if we look at the price, it is the same, which tells us that, apart from those small issues, we are looking at the same camera.

Therefore, if you don’t have any, go for the most recent model. But, if you already have the Polaroid Now 1, it may be better to wait for Polaroid to release new models in which we do see more changes. All up to you!
