If you like to browse and stay informed about the latest developments in technology applied to the home, you will agree with me that Dyson continues to be the queen of innovation. This brand continues to surprise us with each launch and, when we think there is nothing newer, Dyson proves that there is. Today I want to focus on comparing their most recent additions to their catalog of cordless vacuum cleaners. Although, now, we have to say multifunctional cordless vacuum cleaners. And, yes, I am referring to the Dyson Gen5detect Absolute vs Dyson V15s Detect Submarine vacuum cleaners.

The two cordless vacuum cleaners are innovative within the Dyson range, although for different reasons. In the case of the Gen5detect, in addition to the incredible power it has, we see how Dyson continues to improve the filtration system. And, in the case of the V15s Detect Submarine, the main novelty is the scrubbing function with which it complements the excellence in vacuuming to which this brand has accustomed us.

In addition, there are some important differences between them, which have to do with autonomy, engine power or the set of accessories with which they are equipped. Something that the two Dyson cordless vacuum cleaners have in common is that they are not cheap models, although you already know that this company does not position itself as an exactly economical brand. The key is knowing if this level of technology and perfection is worth it or not. And that is what we try to answer in this comparison. Very attentive!

Dyson’s aesthetics are present in both vacuum cleaners

Dyson V15s Detect Submarine vs Gen5detect Absolute

It is normal (and advisable) to know how to identify which brand a product is from solely by its design, and we cannot deny that both the Dyson Gen5detect Absolute and the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine share a similar aesthetic. It is true that we can choose between the nickel and purple version (of the Gen5) or the blue and copper one, which would remind us much more of the V15s. But, even with different options, in both vacuum cleaners we see the same metallic color tone that characterizes Dyson and that, in particular, I think gives them a more fun appearance.

We highlight a small variation that, although not exactly design, is related, and that is that the Dyson Gen5detect Absolute does not have a trigger, unlike the V15s Detect Submarine. For this reason, the mop vacuum cleaner may be a little more complex to use at first.

Two vacuum cleaners with different scents

As we have anticipated in the introduction, although we define the two protagonists of the review as vacuum cleaners, we must qualify. The Dyson Gen5detect Absolute is a 100% vacuum cleaner, but the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine is a mop vacuum cleaner, as defined by Dyson. This is because it combines the actions of vacuuming and scrubbing, although it has a brush for each, which we will detail later.

The main difference between the two models is that, while the V15s can vacuum and mop, the Gen5detect Absolute can only vacuum. What’s more, it is the first Dyson cordless vacuum cleaner that combines this dual functionality, thus matching the majority of brands on the market.

Slight variations in power

We now look at another of the relevant qualities of a broom vacuum cleaner, power. Here, we highlight two things. On the one hand, both models have the Hyperdymium engine, only the Gen5detect engine rotates at 135,000 revolutions per minute, slightly more than the 125,000 rpm achieved by the V15s. On the other hand, this is also reflected in the suction power, which is higher on the Gen5detect. This vacuum cleaner can reach 280 airWatts, while the V15s stays (note, it is still one of the highest) at 240 airWatts.

Now, it’s not all differences. Both models allow you to choose between 3 vacuum speeds: Eco mode, Turbo and Auto. Furthermore, in both cases we know that there are 14 cyclones in the engine, thus guaranteeing the maximum possible effectiveness.

What main brush does each one have?

Dyson V15s Detect Submarine vs Dyson Gen5detect Absolute

This is another of the most important differences, and it is closely related to the functionality of each device. In reality, the difference comes down to a single head, but let’s first start with the ones they share. Both the Dyson Gen5detect Absolute and the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine have the Digital Motorbar brush and Fluffy Optic.

The first, which we could consider the most important because it is the one we usually use the most, is ideal for hard floors and carpets, because it adapts very well to each surface. The second is the one that we easily recognize by its green laser light beam, with which it illuminates the particles in a special way so that we can perceive them, since they go unnoticed to the human eye. Likewise, both vacuum cleaners include a small motorized brush to clean sofas and mattresses, for example.

So how are they different? Basically, in the Nautik head, which is the brush that Dyson has designed for scrubbing. It is designed to be used on very different floors, from tile, stone or ceramic to vinyl, laminate flooring or wood. It is somewhat more voluminous than the Digital Motorbar, because it has a roller that rotates continuously to intensify the effectiveness of the scrubbing. But, without a doubt, what surprised me the most is seeing that the brush always scrubs with clean water, because it has two tanks. Of course, this head is only compatible with this model, we cannot even use it with the Dyson V15 Detect.

Similar autonomy and same charging time

When it comes to battery life, the differences are minimal. In fact, I dare say that they are almost theoretical, because, in practice, we have not noticed them as much. According to Dyson, the Gen5detect Absolute has an autonomy of 70 minutes, 10 more than the V15s Detect Submarine. However, you already know that this also depends on the intensity mode with which we aspire, for example, and can vary in both cases. What is the same is the time they take to charge, approximately 4.5 hours.

And the filtering system?

Dyson Gen5detect Absolute vs V15s Detect Submarine

I admit that this is one of the things that caught my attention when comparing the two Dyson cordless vacuum cleaners, and it did so for two reasons. First, because the Gen5detect Absolute includes a really effective HEPA filter (I would say improving the previous one), capable of retaining particles down to 0.1 microns. Come on, there are few things that can resist you.

And to tell you the truth, I was also expecting to see a HEPA filter on the V15s Detect Submarine, but that’s not the case. It does have a high efficiency filter, but it is not HEPA. The difference is that the Hepa filter retains 99.99% of the particles, while the high efficiency filter retains 99%. Okay, that’s a very high percentage, but I can’t help but be a little disappointed because of the assumptions I had previously made.

A very complete and intuitive LCD screen

In line with the previous aspect, we can see the real size of the trapped particles on the LCD screen that both vacuum cleaners have, which are also in color. This way, we can more quickly see the different particles we are cleaning. On the screen we not only control this; We also check what intensity level is chosen, what mode we are in in the case of the V15s Detect Absolute (vacuuming, scrubbing or both) and if there are maintenance warnings or alerts.

Dyson Gen5detect™ Absolute vs Dyson V15s Detect Submarine: How do I choose the right one?

In this comparison, I think the main decision will depend on whether you are interested in buying a vacuum cleaner that also scrubs or not. Basically, because this is the most important difference between these two models, and almost between the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine and any other in the range. Obviously, price is an important factor, although it is also true that any Dyson vacuum cleaner is going to seem expensive, because there are always cheaper models. Less excellent, but cheaper.

What you can be clear about is that, with any of them, the results will be excellent in terms of technology, power and cleanliness. The Dyson V15s has the advantage that it is also versatile because we can scrub, but the Gen5detect Absolute surpasses many other vacuum cleaners in its filtration capacity, as well as in power. In addition, the range of the Fluffy brush light is greater on the Gen5detect Absolute. This is not the most important thing, but if in doubt, it will help you choose.

In short, think about what your usage preferences are and, based on them, choose the model that best fits.
