Whenever Google launches a product updated to a new version, the first thing we do is compare it with the previous model, because it is the best way to check if there has been evolution. This is what we do in this article with the Google Pixel 8 and the Google Pixel 7, two smartphones between which there is a little more than a year difference. Of course, we must clarify that we have focused on the two standard models of each range, since there are also Pro versions.

One of the main updates that the Google Pixel 8 has compared to the 7 is the processor, which goes from the G2 version of the Google Tensor to the G3. Broadly speaking, this makes the Google Pixel 8 faster when processing certain applications, but it is not accompanied by an increase in storage capacity. Of course, the Pixel 8 has the Android 14 operating system, a more updated version than the Pixel 7.

In the cameras section, the main innovations have come as a result of artificial intelligence. The two smartphones have the same cameras and in the same resolution, only the Pixel 8 includes more editing, focusing and sharpening functions thanks to AI. On the other hand, one of the main sales arguments that Google has communicated on the Pixel 8 is that the software will not become obsolete until 2030, since it includes updates for approximately 7 years.

Do you want to know which of the two is more worth it? Or is it interesting to switch to the Google Pixel 8 if you already have the Pixel 7? In this article, we answer all these questions.

Few design changes

Google Pixel 8 vs Google Pixel 7

Aesthetically, there are not many differences between the Google Pixel 7 and 8. The technological giant maintains the same aesthetic line in the Google Pixel 8, with the variation of the colors in which it is available. Likewise, it has lightened the size and weight of the Pixel 8, although it is not a major difference. And, if we look at the screen, there are some more small changes, although not major.

The screen of the Google Pixel 8 is slightly smaller than that of the Pixel 7, which motivates the weight loss that we have mentioned. In addition, the Pixel 8 integrates the “Actua” screen, which is characterized by having a brightness that can be up to double compared to the Pixel 7 screen on the outside. However, both screens have OLED technology and have the same resolution, so there are no major changes. On the other hand, the two smartphones have a resistance level of IP68, which indicates that they have the maximum possible tolerance to water and dust.

The processor is updated

The processor of the Google Pixel 7 is the Google Tensor G2, which was not characterized by its special speed. In the Google Pixel 8, the company has introduced the G3 version of Tensor, which greatly improves performance, especially when we have several apps open at the same time. Likewise, the operating system goes from Android 13 on the Pixel 7 to Android 14 on the Pixel 8, although it is also possible to install Android 14 on the Pixel 7 with an update. On the other hand, the change in processor does not entail an increase in storage memory, which is the same in both smartphones.

Almost the same battery

Google Pixel 8 vs 7

Theoretically, the Google Pixel 8 slightly increases the battery capacity, going from 4355 mAh to 4575 mAh. On the other hand, theoretically, the two Google Pixel smartphones can work for more than 24 hours in standard use mode, although reality is far from that figure.

Taking into account that we use our mobile phone all the time, the battery life of the Google Pixel is usually reduced to approximately 10-13 hours. Of course, both models have 30-watt fast charging, which allows them to recover 50% battery in half an hour.

More AI in cameras

Let’s talk, now, about another of the main components when evaluating which smartphone to buy, the cameras. On paper, the differences between the two Pixels are minimal. Both have a 50 MP wide-angle camera as the main rear camera, to which is added a 12 MP ultra-wide angle camera and an autofocus sensor with laser detection. To highlight a nuance, the aperture of the Pixel 8’s main camera is larger, which allows it to capture more light.

The front camera is 10.8 MP on the Google Pixel 7 and 10.5 MP on the Pixel 8, an almost imperceptible difference. However, the Pixel 8 offers a wider range of photo and video editing features than the Pixel 7 thanks to artificial intelligence. Specifically, through a magical editor with which it is possible to modify the light, composition and sharpness of the images at the time of capturing them.

Sensors and technological functionalities

Google Pixel 7 vs 8

Another element that we look at in a smartphone is the set of sensors it incorporates. In this sense, both the Google Pixel 8 and 7 have a fingerprint sensor, a facial recognition sensor to unlock the phone and other sensors such as proximity or ambient light. In addition, they are compatible with NFC technology for contactless payments, and have a dual SIM card, with space for a nano SIM and an eSIM.

In the connectivity section, it should be noted that both are compatible with Bluetooth and WiFi, although not in the same versions. The Google Pixel 7 supports Bluetooth 5.2 and WiFi 6E, while the Google Pixel 8 supports Bluetooth 5.2 and WiFi 7.

Microphones and speakers

Microphones and speakers are important parts of a smartphone, because they are what will help us ensure that our telephone conversations have the highest quality possible. In this sense, both smartphones have 3 internal microphones and stereo speakers. The Google Pixel 8 also has the spatial audio function.

Do I upgrade to the Google Pixel 8 if I have the Google Pixel 7?

This is the question that many users ask themselves, if it is worth changing from the Google Pixel 7 to the Google Pixel 8. Our recommendation would be that, if you have the Pixel 7, do not update to the new model, because the changes it has are not sufficiently innovative enough to make it worth changing in such a short space of time.

That is to say, the Google Pixel 8 does not have any innovation that has convinced us to spend a lot of money that you have already done before. And, considering that Google launches new models every year, it may be more worth it to wait and see the evolution of future smartphones.

On the other hand, if you don’t have either, we would tell you to go for the Google Pixel 8. The price difference is quite proportionate compared to the improvements it has, and the quality of the photos and videos is higher thanks to the combination and the majority presence of AI. But, as we always tell you, the final decision depends only on you.
