Samsung is not one of the leading brands in the field of smartphones by chance, but we expected more innovations between the Samsung Galaxy A54 and the A53, the previous version.

We cannot say that there is no evolution, because there is, only that it is more restrained than we would have liked to see. Or, at least, the differences do not represent a leap in quality like the one we have seen in other ranges, as in the case of the Samsung Galaxy S23 compared to the S22. However, we must also recognize that the Samsung Galaxy A53 is a smartphone with a very interesting value for money, and we do not know to what extent the brand will have been able to match or improve this in its new model.

To find out, we delve into this comparison in which we analyze all the differences and similarities between the two. We already told you that, in most aspects, the Samsung Galaxy A54 surpasses the A53. However, there are some who have surprised us to see not only that it has not surpassed it, but that it has remained as it was.

The best thing is that you discover it for yourself, so we encourage you to read this comparison until the end to find out if it is worth it, or not, to upgrade to the new Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

Design: colors vary

Samsung Galaxy A53 vs A54

Apparently, there is not a big aesthetic difference from the point of view of dimensions and weight; the Samsung Galaxy A54 is somewhat heavier, but the difference is practically not noticeable. What does change is the variety of colors in which they are available. While the Galaxy A54 is found in more vivid colors, such as lime green or violet, the A53 opts for pastel tones such as blue and peach. Of course, the black and white option is in both models.

We also see that there is a small difference in the back, and that is that the Galaxy A53 has a different arrangement of cameras, because it does not have all of them in a linear way and because they are on a very light pedestal that makes them stand out, while in the Samsung Galaxy A54 cameras are integrated within the smartphone itself.

The screen has slight variations

Undoubtedly, the main element in a smartphone is the screen. And, in this sense, we have been surprised to see that the Samsung Galaxy A54 has it slightly smaller than the previous model. It is true that the difference is reduced to 0.1 inches, since both have AMOLED technology. And, in terms of resolution, there is also a small variation that is hardly noticeable, so, in practice, we will have the feeling of being with the same smartphone.

The A53 has one more camera

Let’s see, now, the cameras, which are another of the essential elements in a smartphone. The logical thing would be to think that, in the new model, the number of cameras would increase, but this is not the case. The Samsung Galaxy A54 has three rear cameras and one front camera, but the A53 adds another deep rear camera. Also, the A53’s main camera has a higher resolution than the A54’s (50 MP vs. 64 MP).

This means that, as far as camera quality is concerned, the victory goes to the Samsung Galaxy A53. However, it would be unfair to say that the Samsung Galaxy A54 does not take good pictures, because the trick that Samsung has used is to increase the size of the main sensor, to capture images with better quality in lower light conditions.

And the processor?

The processor, which largely measures the overall performance of the phone, has been upgraded in the Samsung Galaxy A54. Both have the Exynos processor, only the version of the A54 is more recent. In practice, it translates into somewhat better performance when it comes to processing videos, images and any file. In fact, Samsung claims that it improves its performance by around 20%; we cannot measure it, but it is assumed that it will follow the natural evolution of the updates in this type of processors.

In fact, the operating system of the Samsung Galaxy A54 is Android 13, while that of the A53 is Android 12. The fact that the A54 is more recent means that the applications that we can enjoy also have a more up-to-date version, so that, as with the processor, it is a change of technological evolution.

On the battery, there are no innovations

We admit we were expecting some improvement when it comes to battery life, as on paper Samsung claims the A54 lasts longer. However, in our test they last exactly the same. And it makes sense, because both smartphones have a capacity of 5,000 mAh.

However, it must be recognized that the total duration of the battery also depends on the use we make of the phone. That is, how many applications we have open at the same time, how long we use the mobile during the day, etc. What the two mobiles do maintain is the 25-watt fast charging option, so there are no innovations in this regard.

Let’s review connectivity

When we talk about connectivity, it really is a fairly broad term in which we include different aspects. For example, both phones have Bluetooth support, only the A54 has it with version 5.3, compared to 5.1 on the previous model. Although, so far, we haven’t really found any apps where this is noticeable.

That said, they also share Near Field Communications (NFC) technology that allows for contactless payments. And finally, they share the Smart Switch functionality, which is used to recover data that we have on a computer.

Same resistance to external agents

Reviewing the specifications of both smartphones, we realize that both have the degree of resistance IP67. This means that they have a little more resistance to water than to dust, although it is quite high in both cases. Therefore, it is assumed that if a few drops of water fall or a speck of dust enters the phone, it will not damage it, although it is preferable not to take this risk and avoid taking it to the beach or swimming pool without protection.

Samsung Galaxy A54 vs. A53: Which one do we recommend?

Once we have already reviewed the differences and similarities between the two, it is clear to us that Samsung maintains a fairly continuous line in the Galaxy A range, both from the design point of view and from the functionalities. That being said, our conclusion leads us to think that if you just bought the Samsung Galaxy A53, it may not be worth switching to the A54 so quickly, because it does not have any features that make us discard the previous model if it has almost no use.

Now, if your question is which smartphone to buy between the two because you don’t have any previously, the decision will also depend on the economic difference. It is logical to think that the Samsung Galaxy A54 is more expensive because it is more recent and because it improves many of the features of the A53. However, if the economic difference is too excessive, we recommend that you wait for Samsung to launch an interesting offer that reduces it.

That is to say, we do believe that there should be a difference between the price of both, but this should not be exaggerated, because the improvements presented by the Samsung Galaxy A54 do not show a very large qualitative leap, but rather what can be expected in an update of a smartphone to a next version.
