Similar design, but very different materials

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic vs 5 Pro

The sober design of the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic has been made from stainless steel and sapphire glass on its screen, which has a rotating bezel. Unlike the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, you can choose between two sizes: 47mm and 43mm. The watch incorporates a hybrid eco-leather strap and is available in black and silver finish options. In terms of size and weight, both versions are heavier than the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, and while the 43mm version has a more compact case, it uses stainless steel instead of titanium.

For its part, the distinctive feature of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is its wide bezel that protrudes from the screen. This provides additional protection in case of shock, which is normal considering that its approach is aimed at outdoor activities. This watch made of titanium and sapphire glass on its screen, has dimensions of 45 mm in diameter, 10.5 mm thick and a weight of 46 grams (without taking the strap into account).

Both models provide a 5 ATM / IP68 dust and water resistance rating. While the titanium of the Watch 5 Pro might offer better protection against scratches, the stainless steel of the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic tends to be more resistant to chips and dents in adventurous activities.

Different construction, but similar qualities

As we have anticipated, the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic is available in two Super AMOLED screen sizes and each one has slightly different resolutions:

  • 1.5-inch (47mm) display: 480 x 480 pixels
  • 1.3-inch (44mm) screen: 432 x 432 pixels.

Both screens display an ambient watch face that remains constantly active.

The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro also uses a Super AMOLED screen, but its size and resolution are always the same (1.4 inches and 450 x 450 pixels respectively). Just like the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic, the Watch 5 Pro’s display also offers an always-on display feature.

In both cases, these screens are protected by sapphire crystal, which provides more protection and shine.

One of the most notable differences on the screen is that the bezel of the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic is much thinner than that of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. The bezel of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has been made wider to contribute to greater protection, since it is a model that is highly focused on sports activity.

In terms of image quality, and despite the different sizes, we do not see great between them.

A more powerful model in Software and another in battery

As expected, Samsung has chosen to provide the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic with a more up-to-date processor, the Exynos W930, it has also increased the RAM memory to 2 GB. For its part, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has the Exynos W920 processor and 1.5 GB of RAM. The consequence is that the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic is more powerful and, therefore, presents better performance management.

Both watches have 16GB of built-in storage, enough to store a few playlists and various downloaded apps.

As for operating systems, the new Galaxy Watch 6 Classic incorporates the new version Wear OS 4 and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro the previous version Wear OS 3. Although there are not many new features, it is always better to choose the latest version of the software. However, we expect the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro to receive the update to Wear OS 4 soon.

If we look at the battery life in theory, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has a clear advantage. It houses a 590mAh battery, considerably more than the 425mAh in the 47mm Galaxy Watch 6 Classic, and nearly double the 300mAh unit found in the 43mm versions. The consequence is that the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro lasts up to 80 hours and the most powerful version of the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic stays at 40 hours.

Up-to-date health and exercise tracking

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 vs 5

The Galaxy Watch 6 Classic uses the same BioActive sensor as the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. This sensor performs everything from body measurements to electrocardiograms (ECG). However, the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic adds immediate skin temperature measurements and a new alert feature for continuously elevated heart rate.

In addition, the temperature sensor of the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic has improved sleep tracking with features such as: information on sleep stages, recorded snoring, updated sleep score and a training program to improve sleep. In the realm of fitness, Samsung has introduced a custom training mode, which allows users to input their own selection of exercises to create a unique and specific training routine.

However, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro allows you to import GPX track files and has a backtracking feature in case you got lost. Plus, the unique watch face that includes a compass not found on the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic.

It is true that some of these differences are due to the software update, which implies that they could be updated on the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro soon.

Conclusion – Which Galaxy Watch do we recommend?

Initially, the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic presents itself as a superior option, thanks in large part to significant improvements in its software and various health and exercise tracking features. A more powerful processor, more RAM and a more current operating system give this model better performance and power management. Also, the design is much more elegant and, surprisingly, this model is available at a price below that of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro.

For its part, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro continues to retain valuable qualities in the sports field. Especially in outdoor activities and routes, its focus on endurance and battery life gives it a significant advantage. Also, the fact that it allows you to import GPX route files is always an extra.

Although the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic stands out in terms of price, features and sophistication, we recommend the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro to the most sporty people (especially for hiking).

For all other cases, the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic would be our pick.
