If you are thinking about which electric toothbrush to buy to renew yours but are looking for a simpler and cheaper model, you are interested in this article. In it, we compare the most important characteristics of the Oral-B iO 7, 5, 4 and 3, where the most basic brushes, such as 3 and 4, are mixed with other mid-range ones, such as 5 and 7. The key is to identify their differences and decide which one has the best quality-price ratio according to your preferences.

The Oral-B iO 3 is the most basic of all; In fact, it has 3 brushing modes, unlike its rivals, which have a few more. It has no Bluetooth, no travel case, and no display or position tracking. However, it meets the basic qualities that we look for when deciding which brush to buy. Its round head moves with microvibrations combined with oscillating technology, just like the other three brushes. And, as far as autonomy is concerned, it is the same in all three cases.

However, here it is the Oral-B iO 7 that has the advantage, since it goes from about 12-16 hours of charging to only 3 hours. In addition, it is the one with the most brushing modes and the most advanced in terms of technological functionalities. As for the Oral-B iO 5 and 4 brushes, both are mid-range (and, in fact, the price difference is very small) although there are changes to take into account. The 5 is a little more sophisticated at a technological level, because it includes an interactive screen and a more brushing mode.

But, so that you are clear about all the differences and similarities between the four Oral-B electric toothbrushes, we are going to explain all their features in detail. Join us!

All brushes have round heads

Oral-B iO 7 vs 5 vs 4 vs 3

One of the first things we look at when choosing an electric toothbrush is the shape of its head. In this case, all four have a round head that executes gentle micro-vibrations combined with oscillating technology. Therefore, there are no differences in this sense.

On the other hand, the models that we have selected for the comparison have a single head, except for the Oral-B iO 7, which has 2. However, you can also choose other versions with more replacement heads. The same happens with the travel case, which is included in the equipment of the Oral-B iO 7, 5 and 4, but not in the 3 (it is included if you choose the 2-head model).

And lastly, not all brushes are available in the same colors. All of them are sold in black and white, to which are added others such as pink, purple or blue.

Same autonomy, but different charging time

Most Oral-B electric toothbrushes have a battery life of about 56 minutes, which, according to the brand, translates into approximately 2 weeks of use (this may vary depending on the frequency of brushing). To know how long you should brush, all four incorporate a 2-minute timer, which is the optimal brushing time. Every 30 seconds, the brush emits vibrations that allow you to control how long you spend.

However, the charging time becomes shorter in the more advanced models of the series. Thus, the Oral-B iO 3, 4 and 5 take about 16 hours to recover the entire battery. On the other hand, the Oral-B iO 7 only takes 3 hours. None have a smart charger.

Brushing modes: progressive improvement

Oral-B iO 3 vs 4 vs 5 vs 7

Another key difference between the four protagonists of our review is the number of brushing modes that each one has. The Oral-B iO 3 has 3 modes, which become 4 in the next one, and 5 in the Oral-B iO 5 and 7. In addition to the daily cleaning, sensitive and whitening modes that the Oral-B iO 3 has , model 4 adds the extra-sensitive mode.

For its part, the Oral-B iO 5 has these four modes plus the intense cleaning mode. And finally, the Oral-B iO 7 has daily cleaning, intense, sensitive, whitening and gum care modes. As you can see, even between the two electric toothbrushes with 5 modes there are differences, since they do not have exactly the same ones.

Pressure sensor and position tracking, one for lime and one for sand

We continue analyzing the functionalities that Oral-B brushes have. The four models we have chosen have a pressure sensor that lights up depending on whether or not we are exerting the appropriate pressure. If it is correct, we see a green light. If it is incorrect, the light is red, and if there is not enough pressure, it turns white. This is very useful to optimize oral cleaning without damaging our gums, although you should take it only as a reference, since each person has a different sensitivity.

On the other hand, not all of them have position tracking, a feature that we only see in the Oral-B iO 5 and 7. This functionality allows you to see in the app how you are brushing your teeth in real time in the 6 different areas of the mouth. This way, you can check if there are any areas that need more cleaning, and it is easier to detect brushing errors.

The screen also evolves

Oral-B Serie iO 4 vs 7 vs 3 vs 5

The Oral-B iO 3 and 4 toothbrushes do not have a screen, but rather their central part is completely smooth, except for the light that illuminates when it is time to change the head. On the other hand, the Oral-B iO 5 has an icon screen, where we can see the different icons of the cleaning modes to know which one is selected.

The Oral-B iO 7 evolves towards a larger, interactive screen, where we can see greeting messages when we turn it on, in addition to the brushing information. Likewise, it is interesting that you know that the Oral-B iO 7, 5 and 4 are compatible with the mobile app, unlike the Oral-B iO 3, which does not have Bluetooth connectivity.

Which electric toothbrush is worth the most?

Choosing an electric toothbrush will depend on your needs and limitations. If we stick to practical and objective issues, the Oral-B iO 7 is the most complete of the four, but it is also the most expensive.

The main value of this brush, from our point of view, is the gum care mode (we find it very useful to combat gingivitis) and the fact that it only charges in 3 hours. The interactive screen also adds, but it is not a main decision criterion.

If you cannot afford such a high expense and prefer a more affordable brush, our recommendation would be to opt for the Oral-B iO 5. It has a very similar price to the Oral-B iO 4, but it adds one more brushing mode, it has display and position tracking. We particularly use position tracking a lot, and the Oral-B iO 4 doesn’t have it.

That being said, the final decision is solely up to you. Since all four electric toothbrushes are Oral-B, you can rest assured when it comes to brushing effectiveness and quality. In fact, the head is the same in all four cases; The differences are reduced to issues of greater comfort of use or performance to further optimize its full potential.
