We dare to say that oral health is one of the most important aspects that we must take care of throughout our lives. And yet, the rhythm of day-to-day life also makes it one of the most neglected. Therefore, having an electric toothbrush in which technology allows you to maintain the best dental care and hygiene is key, and today, it is possible. In this article, we compare two of the most sophisticated electric toothbrushes of the moment: Oral-B iO Series 10 and Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige.

As you can see, they belong to the two big brands of the moment when it comes to dental technology. Oral-B has been positioned as the reference brand for many years when we think about toothbrushes, and Philips has achieved great recognition within this market, although it is not the only one in which it is present. Each one develops its own technology, this being one of the big differences between both models.

Thus , the Oral-B brush works using magnetic technology, with a series of microvibrations with an oscillating movement. Instead, the Philips brush uses sonic technology. Another big difference is in the type of charging base they have, since one model is intelligent and allows for much faster charging than the other. However, there are many similarities between the two electric toothbrushes, in addition to their differences. That’s why it can be difficult to choose which of the two to stay with, if we don’t know what we should look for. Keep reading to find out!

Two very recognizable designs

Oral-B iO Series 10 vs Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige

Aesthetically, it is easy to identify which is the Oral-B brush and which is the Philips. The Oral-B iO Series 10 is available in two colors with a more “stellar” touch, to understand us, because they remind us of a design that simulates the universe. The head is rounded and has an LED light ring right in the part where it screws onto the body of the brush. However, the highlight of this brush is the interactive screen it has, where we can see a smiling face light up every time we turn on the brush or when we perform the movements correctly.

For its part, the Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige has an oval-shaped head, the Premium All-In-One A3. According to the brand itself, this head removes up to 20 times more plaque than a manual toothbrush. In addition, it is somewhat thinner than the Oral-B brush, although we miss the screen. On the other hand, the Philips Sonicare also has a luminous ring, only it is located at the bottom and is much less visible than the one the Oral-B has.

What brushing technology do you use?

The most important thing to compare performance between two electric toothbrushes is to know which brushing technology they use. The Oral-B iO Series 10 uses iO magnetic technology, which works through an oscillation and rotation movement with very gentle micro-vibrations. The magnetic system causes all the energy to be concentrated at the tips of the brush filaments, thus multiplying its effectiveness.

On the other hand, the Philips brush works with sonic technology, thanks to which it is capable of making up to 62,000 movements per minute, removing a higher percentage of plaque and dirt. When in doubt about what type of brushing is best, there is no absolute truth, and it depends a lot on each individual.

Toothbrushes with sonic technology usually make more movements per minute, although, according to several studies, it is the oscillating-rotating ones that help the most to eliminate plaque formation. Gingival sensitivity is another factor that also influences what type of brush is best for you; the most sensitive people will appreciate a sonic one.

Finally, it should be noted that the Oral-B has 2 more brushing modes than the Philips (tongue cleaning and extra sensitive mode), but the Philips Sonicare has 3 intensity levels to choose from, unlike the Oral-B , which only has 1.

Maximum optimization of technology

Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige vs Oral-B iO 10

One characteristic that the two electric toothbrushes have in common is that they both use technology to maximize their potential. In fact, in the Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige, it is only possible to change the brushing mode through the app, so it is essential to have it downloaded. In the case of the Oral-B iO 10, the app helps a lot to improve brushing, but it is not totally necessary.

In both cases it is possible to carry out real-time three-dimensional monitoring of brushing thanks to artificial intelligence. That is, the app itself shows us the areas where we brush best, as well as those that need reinforcement. To do this, it should be noted that both brushes have a pressure sensor thanks to which we can know if we are applying the appropriate pressure at all times.

Let’s talk about the battery and the type of charger

Another important aspect in making the purchasing decision is knowing how long the brush battery lasts, and how much charging time it needs. In this sense, both models have an approximate autonomy of 14 days, which, in the Philips, can be extended up to 21 with optimized use. In any case, there is a light indicator that tells us when the brush needs to be charged in both models.

Regarding the charging base, the victory goes to Oral-B. The iO Series 10 features an iO Sense smart charger. One of the things that surprised us the most is that, on the base itself, it reflects our own mouth so that we know where to brush at that precise moment (another reason why the app helps, but is not essential). Although, without a doubt, the aspect that makes the most difference is that you can recharge the brush battery in just 3 hours, while the Philips Sonicare needs about 16 hours.

Only one has a screen

Oral-B iO 10 vs Sonicare 9900 Prestige

And that, as you know, is the Oral-B iO 10. It has an interactive screen that is not only useful, but is also very attractive and visual. On the screen we can see a welcome greeting every time we turn it on, and that seems like a detail that greatly improves the user experience, although it is not essential. In addition, it is easier to see if we need to apply more pressure, because the light ring lights up red, and is located closer to the eyes than on the Philips brush, where we find it at the bottom. This brush also lacks a screen.

The timer is not exactly the same

Both toothbrushes have a timer so that we can control the brushing time (you already know that 2 minutes is ideal). However, they are not the same. The Oral-B iO 10 applies 4 intervals of 30 seconds, after which there is a small light warning (this brush does not vibrate, unlike the Philips one) . On the other hand, in the Philips Sonicare there are 6 intervals of 20 seconds. In addition, this brush turns off automatically once that time is up.

What is the best electric toothbrush?

This is the crux of the matter; but, in a way, it’s like asking if you love mom or dad more. There is no single answer, because both are high-end electric toothbrushes with a level of technology that makes it possible to optimize brushing as much as possible and have excellent oral health. The key is knowing which one best suits your needs.

To do this, for example, you must identify if you have more or less sensitivity in your gums, if you tend to accumulate more plaque or if you travel frequently and need a brush that charges faster. Another decisive factor is the price, which is higher for the Oral-B. Remember that this brush has 2 more modes than the Philips one, and has some extra features, such as the screen and, above all, the iO Sense smart charger.

Now, is it more worth it than the Philips brush? Depends. Honestly, we think the Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige is a very good value for money, better than the Oral-B. Of course, the technological sophistication of Oral-B is indisputable. Therefore, think about what your most pressing needs are and how much budget you have. Whichever one you choose, you will be right, I’m sure.
